For long social sector has been confined to the government or charitable initiatives of wealthy organizations. Social Stock Exchanges (SSEs) offer an innovative platform designed to making positive social and environmental change. They present a new era in responsible investing bringing together capital and conscience for a better world.
The SSE model was initiated by Brazil in 2003 and grew to six other countries including United Kingdom, South Africa, Portugal, Singapore, Jamaica, and Canada in the past two decades. The concept is still in its nascent stage with just three countries out of seven being presently active.
Recently the Indian Government announced its plan to bring electronic SSE under the regulatory ambit to link social enterprises and donors. The government aims to facilitate funding and growth of social enterprises and create an enabling mechanism to ensure robust standards of social impact and financial reporting. Following this, SSEs have received renewed global attention given it’s potential to be world’s largest and most impactful SSEs.
To be a part in government’s plan and given the possibilities created by SSE, it is crucial for the stakeholders to understand the concept, essential requirements, eligibility conditions and reporting standards associated with SSE. This will be essential towards a sustainable future and realizing the full potential of the government’s plan.
